Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Throughout the year, my law firm handles many serious motorcycle accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries.  Most of the times, the injuries are permanent and devastating.  Beginning tomorrow, May 1, 2008, the entire month has been dedicated by numerous organizations, non-profit and government agencies, as well as my law firm as being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  The purpose is to promote safe driving and recognition of motorcyclist on the roads.

It has been my experience, that most motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers who say “I didn’t see him or her.”  Since motorcycle are among the smallest vehicles on the road, often times, as drivers, we must exercise great caution when entering intersections and changing lanes.  We have to practice attentive driving and preventative driving skills.  This month, I will be participating in many of the safety programs and initiatives planned.  Please visit our firm website for other information about Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Walmart Drops Lawsuit Against Brain Damaged Employee

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Last month, I posted about a Walmart employee who was involved in a serious accident with a truck that caused her various permanent brain injuries.  Walmart had filed a lawsuit to collect their medical expenses after the successful trial of the woman’s case.

Earlier this month, Walmart decided to drop its lawsuit for subrogation rights of this claim.  Walmart was criticized by many organizations and lawmakers who were in disbelief that the corporate giant would take such a position.  Wal-Mart’s top executive for human resources, Pat Curran, wrote that Shank’s extraordinary situation had made the company re-examine its stance.  Good idea.

California Teen Driving Safety Week

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Yesterday, California Teen Driving Safety week started.  This statewide effort is aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of unsafe driving and curtailing teenage deaths that are the result of motor vehicle accidents every year.

Impact Teen Drivers has also launched its campaign this week throughout California’s high schools.  This program is a fantastic educational platform that will educate teens about the perils of dangerous driving. 40% of all teen deaths in California are a result of a motor vehicle accident.  In addition, 77% of all motor vehicle accidents are caused by the beginning driver.

The American Automobile Association conducted a study which found that in motor vehicle accidents involving drivers between the ages of 15 – 17, there were 177 fatalities and 27,869 injuries.

California Teen Driving Safety Week will run through April 20th.
